It is so hard to cut into a pretty wedding dress. But once I make that first cut, I start getting excited thinking about what I can do with different parts of the dress. This dress was donated and she asked for 2 handkerchiefs made to use for her daughters for “something old” in their own weddings. What a great idea and that’s an easy project for me.
I had already cut away the under slip which included the stiff tulle from the dress. That part I can’t use. I might find a place that either can use it or a place that recycles it.
The dress has a really long satin train with ornate lace and embellishments, I cut that off also. I hand washed It since it was dragged around on her special day! I then air dried it. It is long! I can hardly wait to use it!
Once I cut the satin fabric from the bodice, it makes the bodice look so lonely! I cut the satin into 2 manageable sections. Taking the bodice apart takes patience. I removed the sleeves, (which I use for the tiny gowns), took off the zipper ( to be used for other projects), and removed any snaps hooks and buttons.I used a seam ripper to take off the embellishments. They have been hand sewn by the wedding dress creator. So I’m undoing all their hard work! I really can appreciate the price paid for gorgeous wedding dresses because of all the work to create that dress!
I try to use as much of the dress as possible! I throw away scraps and parts I can’t use.
My next post will be about cutting out as many gowns and wraps as I can using only this dress.
